Study Tips

With only half a semester left until the school year is over, the last stretch is always the hardest. Why not end the school year off with a bang and get good grades? Most students are tired of school by now, and practically lose the effort to finish their grueling assignments and stay on top of their tests. Here are some nice study tips that will not only help you finish the school year, but will be practical in the long run.

For Math and Science, take notes on each lesson discussed. Write down good examples within your notebook that your teacher or textbook gives you. This is to not only help you get used to the process, but as well as a quick resource for you to come back to for homeworks and studying for tests.

Highlight any important key terms or formulas. Using this method helps you remember any vocabulary for History, English, and Social Studies, as well as keep those formulas for Math and Science easy to find.

Do your assignments at the first moment you have time or when you get home. The longer you wait to complete your assignments, the harder it will be to recall what you had learned in class. It is also best to get it out of the way as soon as possible. This way you have more time for yourself and other activities.

Write down any questions you have. If you are doing your homework and have a question on a specific topic, write it down on your homework. When you go to class, ask your teacher and write down the answer to that question. This is so you can understand what you didn’t before and when studying for test, it helps to remember any hiccups you had and overcome them.

Ask your classmates for help. Remember, the teacher will not always be around to help you, so your classmates are the next best thing. If both of you are having trouble, two brains are better than one. Work the problem out together.

When it comes to studying for a test, make a note card. Even though you may not be able to use it on the test, it helps you organize your thoughts. Narrow down the information to the important key terms you’ll need to study. Writing also helps your brain remember the information as well.

Flash cards are also another good way to study for a test, even though it may be more tedious. However, it is better to carry a small wad of flash cards around, rather than a notebook or text book.

If you are studying for a Math test, find a whiteboard. This not only helps you with correcting mistakes faster, but it helps to see the bigger picture as well. You can take a step back and look at the problem. Also, you don’t waste as much paper.

Listen to music. Finding a nice upbeat playlist is a great way to motivate yourself when completing homework assignments or studying for tests.

These tips will help you become better at school, and will prepare your for college. Just make sure to take good care of yourself as well because without the right nutrition and a good night’s rest, your body will have a harder time receiving information. Good luck on the rest of the school year and your future education!

Tillamook Cheese Factory Remodel

Most people have probably been to the Tillamook Cheese Factory at some point in their lives, whether it be on a school field trip or just with their family. Sadly, if someone hasn’t, the last day to walk through the old visiting center was March 6th, but there will be a new remodeled visiting center opening in the summer of 2018. The new visiting center will be 50% bigger at 38,500 square feet. The idea is to accommodate the 1.3 million visitors the factory has annually. In order to suit the large amount of visitors the upgrade will include a larger cafe, indoor and outdoor seating, new gift shop, improved parking, and a brand new ice cream counter. These changes have been talked about for awhile, due to the last design becoming out of date and also not able to hold as many visitors as they’d like.

The Tillamook cheese brand all started in 1894 when Peter McIntosh came to Tillamook and shared his cheddar cheese recipe, (the same one still used today) and became a legend known as “Cheese King of the Coast.” Fifty-five years later in 1949, Tillamook Cheese Factory opened, located in its current location. As the brand became more well-known and enjoyed, the factory expanded on its products, introducing new ice creams and cheeses, along with yogurts.

By 2001, the company couldn’t keep up with demands of their products and expanded into another building located in Boardman, Oregon. The brand is now known worldwide, and interest is still growing, leading to their expansion of the factory. Even with this upgrade, they say summer will still have lines and loads of visitors but it will still be much more enjoyable. It is highly recommend to make the visit once the remodeled area is opened!

Senior Pranks

If you’ve been a student at Astoria High School for long enough, you probably know by now that senior pranks have been banned by the high school for the last few years. There has been a lot of confusion recently as to why these practical jokes are no longer tolerated at the school, and hopefully this will clear things up once and for all. Although it may seem like all fun and games, the shenanigans can sometimes get out of hand and cause some serious damage to school property.

April 2017 Horoscopes

Taurus (April 20-May 20):

You are taking a walk on the riverwalk one day, and look out and see a huge humpback whale in the middle of the river. It is drawing quite a crowd, and it suddenly swims closer to the land, jumps up in the air, and creates a huge splash, soaking everyone who is watching from the riverwalk. This feels like seaworld, only a little better because the whale is not being held captive.

Gemini (May 21-June 20):

You are walking into the school one day, and look down and see a lottery ticket lying on the ground in the parking lot, half submerged in a puddle. You pick it up and take it, figuring no one else is going to claim it. You later check the numbers of the Mega Millions and see you have the winning ticket. Congrats! You are going to be lucky this month.

Cancer (June 21- July 22):

One day, your friends decide to pull an awful prank on you. They take everything out of your closet while you are sleeping, so when you wake up you have no clothes to wear to school. The only clothing they did not take is the clothes you are currently wearing, which happen to be hot pink footie pajamas. Looks like you are wearing pj’s to school today. April Fools! You come to school and see your entire wardrobe laid out in the commons, where all of your friends are laughing at your pj’s.

Leo (July 23- August 22):

After school one day, you are practicing your sprints for an upcoming track meet that you are going to be participating in. Your running times are all normal, so you go home to get some rest before the meet. Overnight, there is a terrible thunderstorm, and your house gets struck by lightning. You wake up in the morning, and are surprised that you now have super-speed from the lightning. You realize this while you are running late, and show up to the school in milliseconds.

Virgo (August 23-September 22):

Your family recently adopted a small little bunny from a farm in honor of the Easter spirit. Everyday the bunny seems to grow more and more. After a few days you realize that the bunnies growth is not normal and it seems agitated. On the day of Easter you go to feed your bunny and the cage door is open. You turn around and notice that it is human sized and evolved into the Easter bunny.

Libra (September 23-October 22):

You are taking a stroll through a park one day, and all is going well until a tree unexpectedly topples over, nearly crushing you beneath it. You breathe a sigh of relief that you escaped sudden death, until you notice that all the trees are falling, which is odd, considering it is so nice outside.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21):

Your family decides to take a surprise trip to Australia over break and you are ecstatic. You anticipate this trip until you step foot on the plane. The only issue is you left your retainer in the car and your whole family is checking their bags. You run as fast as you can to your car and back to your gate but when you get there everyone is gone. You rush to the flight attendant and tell her that your family is all on the plane. She lets you in and you begin to calm down. When you wake up from taking a nap you have landed, the only issue is you’re in Austria not Australia.

Sagittarius (November 22- December 21):

Your school is having its annual art show and you decide to put in a piece. You work really hard on all your artwork but never realize how good you actually are. After the art show a stranger walks up to you and asks if he could purchase it and use your future work in his art gallery in New York City. You instantly became famous overnight.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19):

You go to your favorite Chinese food restaurant after a long day. Once you finish your meal you open your fortune cookie and notice there is no paper. Looks like this month your fortune is up to you.

Aquarius (January 20-February 18):

One day, you are visiting the zoo with your little cousins. You are so excited, because the world famous pregnant giraffe, April, is at this zoo. You push your way through the crowd in April’s exhibit, and arrive just in time to see her newly born baby take its first steps. Everyone is in awe at how cute the new baby giraffe is.

Pisces (February 19-March 20):

You begin reading Harry Potter for your book project in English. You being to get tired but know you have to get to chapter five. Falling asleep while reading, you then awake in the Hogwarts castle. You decide to try a few things out with your new magical powers. School just became a little more interesting.

Aries (March 21-April 19):

You walk past a beautiful blue bird one day that is stuck in a little cage. It looks so sad to be stuck in there, so you open the cage doors. It flies away and seems so happy to be free. The bird’s owner does not seem too happy that you released his pet though...

Chuck Norris' Birthday

Chuck Norris’ birthday is in March on the 10th, and this year the King of Karate is turning 77. Chuck is turning into an old man, and with this year’s birthday he takes another step towards what most people would call death, but this is Chuck Norris we’re talking about. At his party while the other kids were playing in the sand, Chuck was playing on the concrete. During the party he even made fire from rubbing two ice cubes together. While he pulled out off some amazing feats during his party, the most impressive is him finishing an entire bottle of milk in 5 seconds… With a fork. Some people even found his diary at the party, that being the Guinness book of World Records. His mom even told everyone a story about when he was born, his mom didn’t drive home, he drove his mom home.

Even at the age of 77 Chuck Norris hasn’t even had a heart attack, because no one attacks Chuck Norris, not even his heart. Everybody going to the party was worried about gas, but not Chuck Norris because all of his cars run off of fear.  A fun fact about Chuck is he can actually hear sign language. Did you also know that Chuck Norris counted to infinity? Twice? He also once killed two stones with one bird. Impressive right? He’s also the best at making some killer lemonade that he makes from picking oranges off of an apple tree. It’s insane how many feats Chuck Norris has, like did you know that Chuck Norris can kill your imaginary friends? All in all I think the morale to this story is that Chuck Norris is awesome. Even the Boogeyman checks under his bed for him before he falls asleep at night.

New Classes at AHS

Astoria High School was full of changes this year, and along with almost a whole new group of English teachers, came new classes. New classes for students included Lyrics as Literature, Psychology 2, and Engineering Technology.

Lyrics as Literature is being taught by English 12 and AP Language teacher Mr. Tackett. This class replaces the literature you learn in a normal english class with lyrics from songs, and as a bonus will also give you that extra english credit you need. You will learn paragraph structure, along with how to analyze the lyrics in songs. This class became an option second semester, and had high demand as many students who wanted to join had to be put on a waiting list, or didn’t even get in. The class is available to Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, and is highly recommended for someone who enjoys writing, or who needs an extra english credit.

Psychology 2 is also a class that just got added second semester, and is taught by Ms. Oien. This is a college class, and also has a huge bonus of the credit transferring as Psychology 101, and not an elective. Mrs. Oien also teaches Psychology 1 that focused on psychological growth development, but this new class focuses on the Psychology of human relations.  Maryann Mandujano, a current student in Psychology 2, said “the class is very interesting, and Ms. Oien makes the class more enjoyable!”  There was also high demand for this class so if you plan to take it next year, forecast early as the classes are very full this semester.

Another class added this year was Engineering Technology, being taught by the one and only Glen Fromwiller. Fromwiller is currently also teaching Chemistry, Chemistry 2 and Physics.  This class focuses on hands-on lab-based activities. The areas focused on are Manufacturing Processes, Mechanical Fabrication, AC/DC Electrical Systems, CNC Machinery, Robotics, Pneumatics, Hydraulics and Basic Household Electrical Systems. This class is possible thanks to a grant that the school got to get the equipment for the class. If you plan to pursue engineering after high school, this is a great class to take to help prepare you for your future!

Psychology Sheep Brain Dissection

Psychology is a semester long class and is taught by Ms. Oien. From this class you can learn about brain based connections and why the brain does what it does. Through the study of psychology you can understand the complex mental processes involved in creating human interactions. That strengthens your personal communication skills and personal feelings. Philosophers say the the study of psychology is one of the most important fundamental skills humans can learn. I think it's good idea for everyone to go check out psychology. Not only because it's a fun class but you will also learn so much. The sheep brain dissection is only one of the many fun, hands-on activities that the class teaches.

Wild Wild West

In spite of his egocentric personality, Kanye Omari West is a famous celebrity because of his popular songs, productions, being the designer of the Adidas Yeezy, and marriage with reality show sensation Kim Kardashian West. However, 2016 was a rough year for Kanye. He saw struggles with poor health, decline in his design company, and personal attacks on his family. Yet, Kanye still manages to rise above it all.

Kanye once again managed to steal Kim Kardashian’s spotlight as she was going to make a comeback after the robbery in Paris, but on November 21st, 2016, Kanye was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation. After his arbitrary behavior while working out at the gym, he was taken to the hospital by ambulance, and was told that he suffered from temporary psychosis caused by dehydration and sleep deprivation. Meanwhile, Kim was headed to the Angel Ball in New York to honor her late father, Robert Kardashian. Kim landed in NYC and immediately took a flight back to Los Angeles to take care of her husband.

Recovering from his medical issues, West displayed his frustrations with the fashion world as he felt that no one takes him seriously since he is a musician. To cover for his embarrassment, he told the media that he associates with architects and has promising ideas for the future of his companies. Though Yeezy Season 4 was not as successful as he had hoped, Kanye told the media that he is getting ready to launch Season 5 as well as a new apparel line. Despite the unsatisfactory outcome, West still ascends towards success.

The strong bond the West family shares is evident, which makes them a good target for rumors. The famous couple, “Kimye,” was once again said to be on the verge of possible divorce. Kanye’s visit with Donald Trump led to the rise of rumors regarding Kim and Kanye’s political differences, though they both state that politics did not come in between them. However, when Kim removed “West” from her surname online, the breakup rumors arose again. Despite what it looks like, the couple posted a family photo during the holiday season showing that they are still together and all about family.

Through all the setbacks and rumors that arose within his personal life, Kanye steadily moves forward with his life on the road to success and happiness.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The legendary Star Wars franchise has once again dazzled audiences with the new film Rogue One: a Star Wars Story. The story takes place right before Episode V: A New Hope and is about the group of Rebel soldiers that stole the Death Star plans and delivered it back to the Rebel leaders.

The film takes place with a sort of twist on the original plot of A New Hope. Jyn Erso is the main character in the movie, played by Felicity Jones. The film explains her life while also explaining the events that lead up to A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Erso also teams up with Cassian Andor, a rebel spy, and his droid K-2SO to find her father, Galen Erso, who was kidnapped to be the lead scientist behind the Death Star plans. Erso befriends multiple supporters of the Rebel Alliance along the way. They all team up to get the plans to the leaders to save the galaxy.

The movie was released into cinemas in the United States on December 16, 2016. It now has made over $700M worldwide. It has gotten many decent reviews, including Peter Debruge of Variety who stated “For the original generation of Star Wars fans who weren't sure what to make of episodes one, two, and three, Rogue One is the prequel they've always wanted.”

This film was the beginning of the new Star Wars anthology series, which tells stories about characters and events outside of the original Star Wars films. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story features new characters and the return of some familiar faces and voices from the original trilogy, including James Earl Jones, the original voice of Darth Vader, to add on to one of the greatest film franchises of all time. Fans all around the world cannot wait to see what else is in store for the future films in the Star Wars world.

CC's Makeup Tips

In the past, I've had many people ask me about my eyeliner or the kind of highlight I use. I’m here to not only share with you some of the products that I use, but also a couple of tips on how to use these products. In order to be able to use these products, you have to know how to use them. When it comes to foundation, you need to make sure that you are using the proper shade for your skin tone (and if you accidentally get a shade too dark, just make sure you blend it in with your neck so it’s not so obvious). When it comes to highlight, make sure that you don’t over do it. You don’t always need to have highlight all over your face, it’s only really meant for above your cheekbone. With eyeliner, if you are a beginner and haven’t gotten in the habit of wearing it, you could always use the technique of using tape along the end of your eyelid and then apply eyeliner. It really helps if you don’t have as much practice!

The reason I wear makeup is not only because it makes me look better, but because it can actually be fun! However, I also struggle with my skin. Breaking out can be super annoying, but luckily I have run into some products that can help out with the breakouts.

Makeup is something I love to experiment with, and I hope that I have helped give you guys some good tips on makeup products. Just remember that makeup is something that is fun to have, but don’t let it get in the way of loving yourself.

October 2016 Horoscopes

Taurus (April 20-May 20):

Just for fun, you and your friends decide to take a spontaneous trip down to the happiest place on Earth, Disneyland. Your trip is going well, until you get caught in a torrential downpour. Unfortunately for you, you are next in line for Splash Mountain as well, and you decided that today would be a great day to wear all white.

Gemini (May 21-June 20):

While getting ready for school one morning, you notice that something is odd. You are trying to figure it out, and you finally figure it out after you catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror. Horrified, you realize that your siblings decided to pull a crazy prank on you by somehow putting hair dye in your shampoo, and now you have to go to school with bright blue hair.

Cancer (June 21- July 22):

While taking a stroll down the riverwalk, you get an odd feeling that someone, or something, is following you. This is not a good feeling for you, considering that the last time you were on the riverwalk, you were being followed by a bunch of mutant sea lions. You slowly turn around, and let out a breath of relief after realizing that it just a puppy who is lost, which is a lot cuter and less scary than a walking and talking 700 pound mammal.

Leo (July 23- August 22):

You and your friends are brainstorming and trying to think of something really cool to dress up as for Halloween. You all finally decide that you are all going to dress up as different superheros this year; This is extremely ironic, considering that you are in an alternate universe, where one of your friends is actually a secret superhero. I wonder how well it will go when the rest of you find out this massive secret...

Virgo (August 23-September 22):

It feels like Christmas is coming a few months early this year for you, because you just adopted three of the cutest kittens you have ever seen. You are so excited to take them home, and play with them. You unfortunately realize once you get home that you are allergic to cats, and you are baffled that you didn’t seem to realize this earlier.

Libra (September 23-October 22):

Ever since you were little, you have always had a massive fear of clowns. With all of this talk of crazy clowns recently, this makes you very nervous for what might happen on Halloween night, and your fear does not get any better when your friends force you to go with them through a haunted corn maze at night, which is full of clowns. Your night gets worse, after you are running from a clown holding a chainsaw and accidentally faceplant in the slippery mud.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21):

One morning while sitting in class, you are really tired, so you are zoning out of what is happening around you, and end up staring at the clock as the seconds tick by for class to be finally over. After a while, you notice that the clock isn’t even going forwards anymore; it’s going backwards. Suddenly wide awake, you look around you in confusion and horror that as the clock went backwards, you notice that time was literally going backwards as well. You look around you, and suddenly, you aren’t surrounded by your friends, you are looking back at confused students who look like they are from the 1920s. Your morning just got a little more interesting...

Sagittarius (November 22- December 21):

One morning, you are taking your pet duck on a walk around your neighborhood. He is being a good duck, just waddling and quacking along, when all of the sudden, he stops dead in tracks, looking at something in the distance. He quacks like crazy, regaining your attention, and you look on in horror, seeing a huge pack of werewolves, who are now running at you at top speed. You pick up your duck and run away, hoping that they won’t catch you. They are faster than you, and right before they are about to eat your pet, you gasp and sit up straight in bed, and realize this was all just an insane dream.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19):

One day while you are getting ready to go to bed, you hear a noise outside your bedroom window. Curious, you go to look out the window, and see a massive group of zombies wandering around in your front yard. Surprised by your newfound discovery, you run away from the window, only to slip on a pile of clothes and fall on your face. The sound of you hitting the floor gained the attention of the flesh-eating corpses, who are all now right next to your window, trying to get in. Hopefully today is not the day you will die…

Aquarius (January 20-February 18):

Your friend decides to get you a buttload (126 gallons) of candy corn in honor of the Halloween season, and you are kind of sceptical about having so much of this candy because you have somehow lived your whole life without eating any candy corn. You decide to try a few since you have so many now, and after realize that you are deadly allergic to them, and have to be rushed to the hospital. Good thing you thought they tasted terrible anyways.

Pisces (February 19-March 20):

Christmas has always been your favorite holiday, and you are so excited that there is only a few months left until the best day of the year. Your friends all think that you are crazy, because you have been listening to Christmas music, wearing Christmas socks, and talking about how excited you are for Christmas since the first week of school. Pumpkin Spice Latte who? Peppermint mochas are the holiday drink that are a must have in this chilly weather.

Aries (March 21-April 19):

One day, you decided that it would be fun to hike Saddle Mountain at sunrise with your friends. All is going well, and you are almost to the top, when all of the sudden, you hear howling in the distance. You all were pretty paranoid in the first place that you might run into creatures wandering around the mountain, so when you hear that, you all decide that it would be a better idea to start walking faster to the top. This was not a good idea, because walking faster caused you to trip over tree roots, and break your leg in the process.

Fishermen vs. Sea Lions

Fishermen vs. Sea Lions

Recently, California sea lions have been appearing in the Columbia River more and more. According to Washington Wildlife Officials, the sea lion population is increasing in the Pacific Northwest. Driven by starvation, the sea lions have ventured further north in search of food. While the sea lions are just trying to survive, the fishermen don’t see it that way. They see it as if the sea lions are stealing their catch, so the fishermen sometimes act upon them with brutality.
